The Pacific Ocean is absolutely gigantic, and covers 60 million square miles and around 13,000 feet in depth.
Its deepest seabed, which is also the deepest on the planet, can be found at its West perimeter located more or less halfway along a north-south line drawn between Japan and Papua New Guinea.
Its known as the Challenger Deep, found 36,000 feet below the surface of the sea, in the Mariana Trench.
What’s still not understood to this day is what might be lurking in Challenger Deep or for that matter any other part of the Pacific. There’s a lot of space for something extraordinary or out of the ordinary to be lurking. And naturally, when a place goes unexplored, the myths and legends come rolling in. We’re here to share the best of them with you.
Every large body of water on planet Earth has its mysteries.
The Atlantic has the Bermuda Triangle, the Arabian Sea the lost city of Dwarka and the Baltic Sea the supposed carcass of a scuttled UFO. But what makes the mysteries of the Pacific so interesting is that many of them have yet to be proved untrue. How wild would it be if some of them ended up being true?
Here are 15 of the most current mysteries of the Pacific Ocean that nobody can explain, weird discoveries and events that keep experts and explorers completely baffled. Let us know your honest opinion.
1. Japan’s Lost City
A Japanese diver had an idea to explore an area of sea a few hundred miles to the South west of Japan in 1995. He didn’t think he’d find anything more than marine life and noteworthy geological formations, but what he stumbled upon was simply amazing, a 10,000-year-old lost city. Archaeologists from around the world descended into the maze of archways and stone steps that many believe are undeniable bodies of proof of a giant sunken city after publicizing his find.
The city’s ruins consist of archways, stone walls, temples and streets which all appear to have been carefully carved out of the side of an underwater mountain. One suggestion is that this city might’ve belonged to an impressively advanced ancient civilization known as the Jomon, unfortunately, very little is known about them.
